Community Hall

The Project: A new assembly building to serve the cultural program of a special-needs community.

The Story...

Camphill Communities Ontario is an organization of families and individuals living and working with persons that have developmental disabilities.

The community required a performance and spiritual space, as well as library, meeting room and social facilities on their rural property near Barrie.

The design is influenced by organic forms and a very tight budget. It was very important to create something instantly recognizable as the figurative centre of the community’s many buildings. The spaces provide opportunity for concerts, theatre, worship, collective meals, sales, meetings. The Community Hall is called “Novalis” and is the physical heart and soul of the Camphill Ontario community.

Group Home Community

The Project: Design residences for community living and care on a rural property.

The Story...

Camphill Communities Ontario is a not-for-profit organization that provides support services to adults and seniors in Simcoe County who have an intellectual disability. They support people in directing their own lives and in promoting partnerships, opportunities, well-being, freedom and contributions in their community. Their program integrates the disabled into a “Community Living” model, where programs and care are delivered in the context of either a working rural based community, and an urban community located within Barrie.

The building program was initiated in 1992. Residences have been designed purposefully small to accommodate households that promote a domestic (rather than an institutional) quality, but still provide the required elements of supervision, personal safety and universal access.

Coffee Shop, Retail, and Offices

The Project: Convert an existing retail bank into a ground floor retail store and second floor offices.

The Story...

The design uses unfinished materials such as concrete, found wood floors and brick walls, exposed conduit, galvanized door frames and wired glass to create an intentionally edgy atmosphere. The serving area is a large semi-circular concrete countertop supported on wood buttresses.

Offices

The Project: Gut and renovate an existing Toronto building.

The Story...

The non-profit organization provides grants sustaining the vibrancy of the professional performing arts, harnessing the benefits of living within the Earth's environmental limits , and improving low-income peoples’ economic livelihoods and access to quality jobs.

The design brief required a suitable meeting room for the board and for general functions, as well as ancillary spaces for the staff.

The renovation removed all finishes back to the masonry walls, and reconfigured the plan to suit the various needs. Simple materials, colours and forms are used to create an environment that reflects the charitable work of the organization, as well as communicating a corporate substance.
